DCH-100KT Smart Home HD Starter Kit

Motion Sensor

We’ve been lucky enough to get our hands on the DCH-100KT Smart Home HD Starter Kit from D-Link.

We’ve been lucky enough to give it a good test and play around with the features to give you an independant review.

The kit comes with:

  • Motion Sensor
  • HD IP Camera
  • Smart Plug

We’ve decided to split this review into three parts giving you an individual review of each product just in case you wish to buy them separately or buy the kit as a whole. We will write up a fully comprehensive review at the end of the testing.

We’ve now started playing around with the DCH-S150 Motion Sensor which is included as part of the kit. The sensor setup was really easy and is used with the mydlink Home App (available for iOS & Android).

We initially had some issues  setting up the Motion Sensor due to a firmware update which meant we had to reset the device.

This motion sensor can be plugged into any available power socket, and sends you a notification when motion is detected – which makes it a handy security product for your home (assuming you don’t have pets triggering it every 5 minutes).

To set it up, download the mydlink app from the Play/App Store and when you select “Add New Device” it asks to scan a unique QR code specifically for your device. You can find this on the quick install card included in the packaging. The app then walks you step by step through the setup process. This involves the device temporarily creating a wi-fi hotspot to which your phone connects and configures it for connection to your home wi-fi.

With its 8 metre, 100° horizontal and 80° vertical range we’ve found the sensor to be highly sensitive to motion, and your ninja skills will need to be a lot better than ours if you want to sneak past it.

It gets even more useful when combined with the D-Link’s Smart Plug (letting you switch something on when motion is detected) or the Monitor HD so you can take a look to see what’s going on. However as the Monitor HD also includes (less sensitive) motion detection, this may be sufficient for your needs.

The devices work together by setting up actions from within the app. Creating a new action is as simple as selecting a detection trigger and then what action you’d like to happen. Everything is well laid out and simple to use, but there were a few options I’d like to see that were missing. For instance I could easily turn a light on when I walk into a room, but I couldn’t find a way to turn it off again when no motion is detected for a set time.

The motion sensor is reasonably priced considering it’s performance and functionality.

We said in our review about the Smart Plug that we had issues with the Motion Sensor. Sadly we had some issues with a firmware update which meant the device was stuck rebooting. We had to reset the device to restart the process. However while this took a bit of extra time the sensor is still great and ideal for a home without pets. Those with pets should be warned the sensor will probably pick up movement from your pets.

Overall I’d rate this Motion Sensor 8/10

Smart Plug

We’ve been lucky enough to get our hands on the DCH-100KT Smart Home HD Starter Kit from D-Link.

We’ve now started playing around with the DSP-W215 Smart Plug which is included as part of the kit. The plug setup was really easy and is used with the mydlink Home App (available for iOS & Android).

We initially had some issues connecting this Smart Plug to the WiFi using WPS. If you live in a building with thick walls this bit of kit could be a struggle for you. It needs to connect to WiFi although it can be connected via WPS or manually using the WiFi ID and password. We had issues doing this though due to the sensor and the way the setup runs. We will explain more about that when we’ve written up our Motion Sensor review.

The device features

  • Smart remote control
  • Push notifications
  • Energy usage statistics
  • Power scheduling
  • Overheat protection

The features make it a great little Smart Plug. I’ve set up the plug with my Television in my bedroom. Using the iPhone App I can turn the TV off just by clicking a simple power button in the app

By using the Smart Plug with the TV I can ensure the TV is not left on standby therefore saving electricity. Although I’m not sure what the savings would mean in the long term as the Plug is powered on all the time and connected to the WiFi network. It’s great for me though as I like to sleep in a pitch black room at night so it means there’s one less light on in the room glowing away.

One of the things I do like about the plug is the options it has. You can see how much electricity the plug is using. Check how warm it is which also means the plug can shut itself down if it gets too hot protecting your electrical item and you can also schedule the plug to come on/off so ideal during the Christmas months for your Christmas lights or great for lamps etc while you’re on holiday.

The app the Smart Plug comes with is smart and stylish too as you can see from the screenshots above.

Overall this Smart Plug is a nice sleek plug which looks great. This plug is a great Smart Plug and ideal for any home and is really great if you’re going on holiday to set lights to come on and off. While i’ve not had the chance to try any other Smart Plugs yet this is a great little plug and I do have a preference for D-Link products. The setup was nice and simple but not extremely great if you have thick walls. We actually set the plug up in another room then moved it to another room and it works fine.

Overall I’d rate this plug 10/10

IP Camera

We’ve been lucky enough to get our hands on the DCH-100KT Smart Home HD Starter Kit from D-Link.

First of all we started playing around the the DCS-935L Monitor HD which is the camera included in the kit. The camera setup was really easy and can be used with the mydlink Home App or mydlink Lite app (available for iOS & Android)

The specs for this camera are:

As you can see the image quality does improve which you would expect. However the quality is not 100% perfect. (Sorry about the feet)

The camera has a built in Microphone so you can listen to what’s going on in the room ideal for monitoring a sleeping baby. You can also take a screenshot and save it directly to your phone, change the image quality settings and choose to change the settings on night mode. It has a manual override or an automatic option.

The camera image looks great though under night vision and normal daylight.

IMG_0417

You can even set up Motion & Sound detection to give you real time alerts to when something happens.IMG_0418

The app the camera comes with is smart and stylish too.

Overall this camera is a nice little sleek camera which looks great. It comes with a wall bracket so you can mount it to the wall or it can sit on a table etc. This camera in my view would be best used to monitor a baby or keep an eye on the front door opening. While the picture quality is not great and could be better it’s still a nice camera and a great bit of kit.

Overall I’d rate this camera 8/10

Overall we’d rate this kit 9/10
